3. The Baseball Grip: This grip is often used by beginners or those with weaker hands. All ten fingers are placed on the club, similar to holding a baseball bat.

Feet Position: Your feet should be shoulder-width apart, providing a stable base.

Knees: Slightly bend your knees to allow for flexibility and movement.

Weight Distribution: Distribute your weight evenly between both feet, with a slight favor towards the balls of your feet.

Spine Angle: Maintain a straight spine angle by bending slightly at the hips. This posture helps you rotate your upper body correctly during the swing.

A solid stance ensures balance and stability, allowing you to execute your swing with greater consistency.

Swing Mechanics

Backswing

The backswing sets the stage for a powerful and controlled downswing. Here are some tips to help you execute a proper backswing:

1. Start Slow: Begin your backswing slowly to maintain control and balance, don’t rush!

2. Rotate Your Shoulders: Focus on rotating your shoulders rather than lifting your arms.

Downswing

The downswing is where the power of your swing is generated. To achieve a powerful downswing, consider the following:

1. Lead with Your Hips: Initiate the downswing by rotating your hips towards the target. This motion should lead your upper body.

2. Maintain Lag: Keep your wrists cocked as long as possible during the downswing. This creates a “lag” that releases at impact for maximum power.

3. Follow Through: Ensure a complete follow-through to maintain balance and control.

MYTH – “Keep Your Head Down or Still”: Keeping your head down or still is common advice you’ll hear from other golfers but it’s not helpful. Opening your head and body towards the target in the downswing will actually help you generate more power and strike the ball better.

Follow-Through

A complete follow-through is crucial for a successful golf swing. Here’s why it matters:

1. Balance: A full follow-through ensures that your swing remains balanced and controlled.

2. Direction: It helps guide the direction of your shot, ensuring accuracy.

3. Power: Completing your swing maximizes the power generated from your swing mechanics.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Over-Swinging

Over-swinging is a common mistake among beginners. It occurs when a golfer tries to hit the ball too hard, resulting in a loss of control and accuracy. To avoid over-swinging:

– Focus on a smooth, controlled swing rather than brute force.

– Practice tempo and rhythm to develop a consistent swing.

Poor Alignment

Proper alignment is crucial for accurate shots. Poor alignment can lead to misdirected shots and inconsistent performance. To maintain good alignment:

– Use alignment aids such as clubs or alignment sticks during practice.

In this YouTube video, Piers and Andy share their three best tips for beginner golfers to help them strike the ball with consistency and confidence and understand how to swing a golf club like the pros.

1. Improve your golf grip

We think arguably the most important part of the golf swing for beginners is the grip.

If you don’t understand how to grip the golf club correctly, and you’ll have real trouble being able to make decent shots and respectable scores when you start playing on a course.

Hold your club from the side, not underneath

First of all, when you go to hold a golf club, make sure you do it from the side, rather than underneath the golf club.

One way to get a good feel for how your hands should move towards the golf club is to go into your golf posture and then clap your hands together.

Gripping the golf club from underneath can cause some serious problems, so we want to avoid that.

Place the club in the correct part of your hand

In your lead hand, the handle of the golf club should run from the bottom of your index finger underneath your hand’s heel pad.

If you get the golf grip right, you should be able to hold the club and support it by wrapping only your index finger round the handle.

When you put the club down on the ground, you should then be able to see the top two knuckles on your lead hand, as well as the logo on your glove from where you’re standing.

This is where you need to be in order to have full control club as you swing the golf club.

Getting the grip of the lead hand correct makes a massive difference, and so many people get it wrong.

2. Make sure the club face opens on the backswing

In the video, Piers uses a tennis racket to demonstrate what should be happening to the club face as you move through your golf swing.

In your backswing, your club face should point AWAY from you.

As you move and strike the ball, the club face should point towards the TARGET.

Then as you rotate through the ball into your finish, the club face should point BEHIND you.

The biggest issue we see with some golfers is trying to keep the club face pointing at the ball all the time.

Their concept is ‘to hit it straight, I need to swing it straight’ but that’s not the case.

The same applies for the arc of your golf swing. Lots of people try to swing straight backwards in order to hit it straight.

However, we actually want to swing back on an upward arc, followed by a downward arc on the way down which should be close to the arc you made on the way up. Then as you swing through, this should be on an upward arc around the body.

3. Turn – Shift – Turn

A really simple tip that you can use at home without a golf club is to practice the turn – shift – turn drill.

Put your hands across your shoulders and stand in your golf posture looking down over a golf ball or an imaginary golf ball if you don’t have one to hand.

Then you’re going to turn in your backswing so your back is facing the target.

Next, shift towards your left leg.

And finally turn, so your chest is facing your target.

Practice this sequence regularly to train the body how your swing should flow and feel in its entirety.

You can then apply this drill when you’re practising with actual golf balls at full speed, and you’ll be swinging with real rhythm in no time.

So, what does it take to be the Ultimate Iron Player? It’s important to understand that if you can have a swing that is as technically sound as Tiger Woods, then obviously that’s important, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. There are definitely more factors to being able to hit more greens with your irons, and if you can improve these factors substantially, then they will even help cover up flaws in technique.

There are 4 main areas that you need to be good at in order to be a good iron player.. We’ll go through these, but we’re going to leave technique to the end.

1. Strategy

Strategy is massively important in becoming a good iron player. If you have a good strategy when you’re hitting shots, it can allow wiggle-room for poorly struck shots. The first thing you should think of is what is my general strategy going to be? So, are you going to be a “flag hunter,” a “middle of the green hitter,” or a “hazard avoider”?

The best train of thought for any amateur golfer should be to aim for the middle or avoid hazards. The only time you should aim for the flag is when it is in the middle or furthest away from the hazards.

A good thing to do next time you play golf is: stand by the green of the hole you’re playing and look at exactly where you shouldn’t miss the green! By that, I mean, if you had to play a chip from there you would consider it to be the hardest chip on the hole. Obviously you should avoid missing the green in this area.  Then look at where the easiest chip shot would be from, this is where you would consider the best place to miss. 

Now, this depends on the position of the flag, as this is what determines the difficulty of the shot. It does sound like a negative way to think about your shots, but the reality is that we all hit bad shots, and by thinking about the best place to miss, you can massively influence your scores. Would you rather have a 30 foot putt, or a chip over a bunker with no green to work with?

The biggest issue we see with poor strategy on the course is when golfers only think about hitting the flag no matter where that flag is. You can even hit pretty good shots, but because you where aiming at a front right flag and you hit your 7 iron a little out the toe and you lost 4 yards, it ends up short and plugged in the bunker. Whereas, if you had hit 6 iron to the middle of the green you have that 30 footer for birdie! 

Pre-Shot Routine

The Pre Shot Routine is the route to having a good strategy and we like to break it into 3 phases which starts with planning. 

  1. Strategy and planning – You need to figure the shot you want to play depending on – yardage, pin location, hazard location, easiest place to play a chip from, wind, elevation, temperature, green firmness and how you’re actually striking it! 
  2. Imagination – Once you’ve got the perfect strategy and planning you have to immerse yourself into what the good shot looks, feels and sounds like! You need to tap into these senses to create an exact replica of what you want to hit! Johnny Miller would say “you need to go to the movies” before you hit your shot.  A lot of players will actually recall previous shots that they’ve hit well and use that as the image blue print for the shot. 
  3. Commitment – Once you’ve planned and imagined the shot you want to hit you just need to commit! If you can then commit and you execute exactly as you want you can’t do anymore, now obviously you may of had a bad plan, that’s fine you just learn and revaluate next time.

So your job from here is to consider all of the elements that go into a Pre Shot Routine and start to develop your own that should take about 20 seconds to execute.  You’ll be amazed how many shots this alone will save you! Myself and Andy are convinced that if we caddied for people we save the majority of golfers up to 10 shots a round with there existing technique.

2. Emotions

Emotions – This is very simple, you can have the best strategy and Pre-Shot Routine but if you’re standing over your iron shot mad because you’ve just 3-putted or had to chip out the trees, your chances of executing a good shot are greatly reduced. So, allow yourself maybe 10 seconds of cursing yourself and then you need to snap out of it and get ready for the next shot! It can be as simple as saying to yourself “what’s my job now?”. Your job is to be prepared to play your next shot. Emotions can also influence your shots, if your playing partner has just hit an amazing 6 iron to 3 feet you could easily be sucked into aiming for the flag yourself! Keep aiming for the middle of the greens.

3. Ball Striking

Although ball striking is part of your technique, I wanted to separate to stress how important it is. I wanted to detach it so that ball striking is a big focus of yours moving forward. You can miss hit shots vertically and horizontally on the face but with this element of ball striking I wanted to focus on the horizontal striking! Basically, heel and toe strikes. Now, we all know they effect shots but you can deliver a square club face and be on a great neutral club path, but if you hit it out the toe you could easily lose 10 yards.

That can be the only thing that causes the ball to finish short in the water so practicing hitting it out the centre is something you need to practice, a tee peg or head cover gate works great for this in your normal practice as well as a nice forgiving set of cavity back irons! No blades please. 

4. Technique

Time for technique. This is massive, but as you can see, this is still only one element of what we need. What we’re looking for with technique is to be able to control the Low Point of your swing, basically the part of the swing arc that is the lowest relative to the ground.

If we think about the best ball strikers, they will hit the ball followed by the ground thus creating a Low Point which is after the ball by several inches. Whereas someone who hits the ground and then the ball, you’ll find that the Low Point will be before or under the ball. We help create a good Low Point with several factors such as: set-up, body pivot, club face control, weight shift and sequencing and concept. Here’s some simple thoughts on these concepts:

  • Set-up – by favouring the lead side at set up you give yourself more chance of creating a later low point.
  • Body pivot – if you sway (move excessively away from the target) in your back swing you can have poor Low Point control, so a good body pivot in your back swing will be a good idea.
  • Club face control – one of the biggest reasons for poor Low Point is an open club face. This causes the body to stall in the downswing so you can square the club face but this stalling causes you to have a Low Point which is often before the ball. You need to get that club face squared in the backswing. 
  • Shifting weight towards the target with good sequencing will help you to lean the shaft forwards at impact making the club head hit the ball on the way down as a result this will create the forward shaft lean at impact that you’re after which de-lofts the clubs and gets that Low Point after the ball. 
  • Concept – finally the concept of what you’re trying to achieve when striking the ball is again massive! If you’re trying to hit the ball on the way up because you feel this is what will hit the ball in the air then you’ll more often than not hit the ground before the ball and have poor Low Point control. If your concept is to lean the shaft forward when striking the ball you’ll create good Low Point control and be able to strike Ultimate Irons

Golf can be an intimidating game to get into, which is why we wanted to address 10 myths that some first-time golfers may come across. At Me And My Golf, we’ve helped thousands of beginners get into the game. We find that the most common reason people struggle initially is because of misconceptions about the sport. So, let’s go through a few scenarios which might crop up and get rid of any potential stumbling blocks.

Tip 1 – “I don’t have the correct equipment to start.”

To start, you only need one club to practice at a golf club or public driving range. You can pick one up from eBay to get started and simply add to your set when you’re ready. Also, when you do go onto the golf course, there’s no minimum amount of golf clubs that you need to take. You can go onto the course with just a few clubs and a putter. You don’t need to spend lots of money to start the game.

Tip 2 – “Other golfers will be watching me!”

As a new golfer, you might feel daunted when you’re hitting golf balls on the range or venturing onto the course. It can feel like everyone is watching you and noticing your mistakes. The truth is that all golfers, even the most experienced, make mistakes – the chances are that everyone else will be thinking about their own game and not yours. The majority of experienced golfers will be happy to help you by offering advice and support. Remember – every golfer that you meet has had to pick up a club for the first time before!

Tip 3 – “I don’t have a club membership – all golfers have those, right?”

Golf memberships are always at the forefront of people’s minds when they think about playing golf. The reality is, the majority of golfers aren’t members of golf clubs and the number of private clubs has decreased significantly. Virtually all golf clubs want you to play at their course. The course staff will be very helpful because they want you to enjoy your experience at their course. In terms of driving ranges, the majority of those don’t offer memberships anyway. We’d recommend giving your local Topgolf driving range a try – they’re loads of fun and well worth visiting.

Tip 4 – “I can’t do it! It’s too hard!”

There’s no doubt – golf can be difficult. The key to success is to set yourself short-term, achievable goals. For example: work on your grip next time you’re at the range, ensuring you focus on the technicalities of this alone rather than the quality of the shots. At the following session, you could shift your focus and set yourself the goal of hitting 3 shots in the air. Basically, keep the goals really simple and short-term. This way, you’ll keep it fun and feel like you’re achieving more each session.

Tip 5 – “I don’t have the time to put in the practice.”

We know, golf can take 4 to 5 hours if you’re playing 18 holes. But you don’t have to play 18! You could play 9 holes in a couple of hours, or simply go for a 30-minute range session.

Tip 6 – “I don’t know the rules!”

Guess what? Neither do we! Of course, we know some of them – but we definitely don’t know them all. You’d be surprised how many experienced golfers don’t actually know all of the rules. You’ll only need to start using the rules when you play competitions – and that’s what a rule book is for. When you’re playing for enjoyment, don’t feel that you need to know the rules – having fun is much more important.

Tip 7 – “The golf course is too intimidating.”

The good thing about golf courses it that they’re all different. You don’t have to play every shot if you don’t want to – you can miss a few out, or pick up your ball and leave if you want to. Again it’s all about having fun.

Tip 8 – “I’m not ready to go on the golf course.”

There currently aren’t many golf courses that require you to be playing at a certain standard. Again, you’re there to enjoy yourself. We often get golfers to set themselves simple goals for when they play. For example, to hit a couple of tee shots onto the fairway, or to strike a few iron shots into the air.

Tip 9 – “I’ll be too slow on the golf course.”

To start with, you probably will be slower than others on the golf course. The key thing is to be aware of other plays, and if they’re waiting, you can simply stand aside and call them through (make sure you’re safe!). You can also find out what the quieter times are at your chosen course to avoid busy periods.

Tip 10 – “It’s all just too expensive for me!”

The great thing about golf is that you don’t have to go all in! You can spend under £100 on a set of golf clubs, you don’t need to become a member at a golf club, and you can pick up a dozen golf balls for under £10. You’re totally in control of what you want to spend.
