Pure Your Irons - the simple 5 step system to strike your irons consistently and lower your scores.

It looks effortless when watching the top professionals strike their irons and sounds so pure as a huge divot flies down the fairway. But how do they do it?

Well, there are lots of factors when it comes to puring your irons, but I’ve decided to show you 3 main reasons we see golfers struggle to get this elusive strike.

1. Concept

Concept is key! If you have the wrong concept or image in your mind of how to play the shot then you are going to produce that image when it comes to the motion.

We still see lots of golfers trying to help the ball in the air with their irons and when we ask them where the divot should start they often say before the golf ball and we also hear comments like “I didn’t get under that one”.

This really shows that many golfers have a poor concept of what they actually need to do to play the shot successfully.

Understand that the loft is there to produce the height on the shot, our job is to get it moving forward, hopefully towards the target.

The majority of the divot will be after the golf ball and to do this, the club head is travelling down when we strike the ball. This, coupled with a centered hit, is what produces that sweet sound and pure strike.

This mental image now allows you to produce a better motion and move closer to those tour pro’s!

2. “Open Club-Face”

The club-face is largely responsible for the starting direction of the golf ball, therefore has a huge influence on the rest of the golf swing. This links ‘faults’ 2 and 3 closely together.

If the club-face gets “open” during the golf swing then we have to make compensations to try and square it up at Impact.

This often results in a poor downswing sequence, a quiet lower body and even poor shaft lean at impact. These all contribute to the club “bottoming” out too early, resulting in a poor strike.

Poor wrist angles at the top of the swing are a common one that we see among golfers.

When the lead wrist gets too “cupped”, the club-face can open and the toe will hang down too much.  It becomes very difficult to create a good downswing sequence from here, so it is a great “position” for you to check in the mirror or on video.

Look at creating a more “neutral” lead wrist at the top of the backswing so that the club-face at least matches the lead arm (if not slightly stronger). This alone will now give your body a reason to move without the need for compensation and makes it far easier to deliver to club to the ball with a slight downward hit.

This moves perfectly to our final fault.

3. Hanging Back

This is one of the most common ‘swing faults’ we see as coaches and it’s basically leaving too much weight on the trail leg at impact, and, as we mentioned in fault 2, your club face plays a huge part in helping that weight shift.

When it comes to starting the downswing, we want the body to move laterally towards the target and rotate so that at Impact the majority of weight is on the lead leg. As you can see from the image, the whole of my lead side is nicely in line. This again helps the golf club bottom out after the golf ball. If you can see daylight between the line and your body then you are considered to be “hanging back”,  making it hard to get that ball-then-turf strike from there.

Our picks for The Masters are locked and loaded, and if you share our excitement, you’ve likely been counting down the days. The Masters is a high point in the golf season for us, especially after the chill of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s a celebration where the enchantment of golf aligns with the bloom of spring, and we couldn’t be more ready. Yet, this is more than just a spectator’s joy; it’s an exploration into the essence of what sets Augusta National apart as golf’s ultimate challenge. So, let’s dive right in, shall we?

Augusta National: A Beauty and a Beast

First off, Augusta National is not just another golf course; it’s a sanctuary of golfing legends. With its pristine fairways and devilishly designed greens, it’s where dreams are made (and sometimes crushed). The course is famous for its blooming azaleas, but don’t let its beauty fool you; it’s as challenging as they come. Especially when they keep tweaking it to add a bit more spice to the mix. Remember, it’s not just about power; it’s about smart plays and precision – especially with those irons.

Iron Play: The Key to Augusta

Speaking of irons, let’s talk about why they’re so crucial at the Masters. Augusta’s greens are notorious for being fast and furious. They’re designed in such a way that if you’re even a smidge off with your approach, you’ll find yourself in a world of tricky putts. This is where iron play comes into the spotlight. It’s all about accuracy and choosing the right spots to aim for, not just going flag-hunting on every shot. Get your iron shots dialled in, and you’re on your way to navigating Augusta like a pro.

Players to Watch: Our Masters Picks 2024 Edition

Now, the moment you’ve been waiting for – our top picks for the Masters 2024. These are the players who not only have the skills but also the mental game to take on Augusta’s challenges:

Jon Rahm: After shaking up the golf world with his move to LIV, Rahm’s got more than just skill on his side; he’s got something to prove. And Augusta might just be his stage to remind everyone of his prowess.

Scottie Scheffler: As the reigning world No. 1, Scheffler’s game is hotter than ever. If he keeps his putter warm, there’s no stopping him from taking the green jacket home.

Xander Schauffele: With added length and a solid all-around game, Schauffele’s ready to step up. His calm demeanor and sharp game make him a serious contender.

Matt Fitzpatrick: Don’t let his quiet demeanor fool you; Fitzpatrick’s got the fire and the finesse to make a big splash. His approach game and putting are top-notch, making him a dark horse to watch.

Beyond the Green: Elevate Your Game

Inspired yet? Watching the Masters unfold is more than just a spectator sport; it’s a chance to learn and apply some of that mastery to your own game. And if iron play is where you’re looking to improve, we’ve got just the thing.

Our brand new “Pure Your Irons Plus” is not your average coaching plan. It’s tailored to help you nail those iron shots with precision and confidence, just like the pros at Augusta. Whether you’re looking to refine your approach shots or simply want to hit it closer more consistently, this is your ticket to leveling up your game.

So, Who Are Your Picks For The 2024 Edition of The Masters?

As we gear up for the Masters 2024, let’s remember, despite us giving you our Masters picks, it’s not always just about who wins; it’s about the journey, the shots, and the moments that make golf the incredible sport it is. Whether you’re rooting for Rahm, cheering for Scheffler, or holding out hope for an underdog story, the Masters is a celebration of golf at its finest.

And for those of you itching to bring a piece of Augusta into your own game, don’t forget to check out “Pure Your Irons Plus.” It might just be the game-changer you need to make this golf season your best one yet.

So, grab your favorite golf hat, mark your calendars, and let’s enjoy the ride that is the Masters. Who knows? You might pick up a tip or two that’ll have you playing like a pro in no time. Here’s to good golf, great friends, and a Masters to remember!

FAQs on The Masters 2024 and Iron Play

Why is Augusta National considered a unique challenge in golf?

Augusta National, with its immaculate fairways, notorious greens, and strategic layout, offers a blend of beauty and challenge unmatched in golf. Its design emphasizes precision, especially in iron play, rewarding well-thought-out approaches and penalizing even minor inaccuracies. Its status as the perennial host of the Masters adds a layer of tradition and psychological challenge, as players face not only the physical course but the weight of history at every turn.

How does iron play affect performance at the Masters?

Iron play is crucial at the Masters due to Augusta’s fast and undulating greens, which demand precision. Success on this course is about more than just power; it’s about placing the ball in the right spot to set up viable birdie chances or safe pars. Accurate iron shots can make the difference between a challenging putt and a straightforward one, significantly affecting a player’s score and stress levels throughout the tournament.

What historical moments at the Masters highlight the importance of iron play?

Historical moments that underscore the importance of iron play at the Masters include Tiger Woods’ iconic chip-in on the 16th hole in 2005, where precision and spin control led to one of the tournament’s most memorable shots. Similarly, Jordan Spieth’s 2015 performance, marked by exceptional iron play, allowed him to set a tournament record for birdies. These moments emphasize how critical well-executed iron shots are to success at Augusta National.

They’re questions we get asked all the time- “Is there a difference between how you’re supposed to swing a driver and an iron? How are they different? And how can I make sure I’m swinging correctly?”

The short answer is yes, they are different. So today we’re going through the set-up, the backswing and the downswing for both shots. So you can see all the differences, and implement some of our top tips into your own practice.

A key factor you need to understand when comparing these two clubs is ‘low point’. When we refer to low point we are referring to the lowest point on the swing arc through the hitting zone.

So now we’ve got that definition out of the way, lets clarify the differences between the two clubs-

Driver

The driver is used to create power and distance. You can tee it up as high as you want, so the ground does not interfere with the shot. To hit the ball as far as possible it’s recommended you hit up on the ball. Meaning there is upward angle of attack at impact, and the low point of the swing is before the ball.

Iron

The irons are used for precision and control. Nearly every iron shot is played off the ground, and because of this it is more affected by ground conditions (for example if the ball is sitting down, or on a slope). Because of these factors it is suggested you hit down on the shot using an downward angle of attack which also means the low point will be past the golf ball.

Now we’ve established the clubs are different, are used for different things and need different swings, let’s go through the three main parts of the swing and give you some tips.

Set-up

For the driver, the ball needs to be teed up high on a tee peg. You should address the ball with a wider stance, with the ball position in line with the heel of the lead foot. Weight distribution should be 55/45, favouring the trail side, and there should be a fair amount of tilt in the upper body, which can be seen in the image below.

Alternatively, for an iron shot, the ball should be addressed with a narrower stance. Ball position must be in the middle of the stance, maybe ever so slightly towards the lead foot, and the weight should be distributed 55/45 however this time favouring the lead side. As you can see from the image above, the torso tilt for an iron shot should be minimal when compared to that for the driver.

Backswing

In a driver backswing we expect to see to see a lot of shoulder movement away from the target. This helps to create more room in the downswing, and facilitates bringing the club back to the ball on a shallower, upward angle of attack.

As you can see the weight has been loaded onto the trail leg, ready for the weight and power to be transferred to the lead side during the downswing. This weight transfer helps to create the distance and power.

A drill that we love to recommend, to ensure you’re getting into the correct position in the backswing is to bounce your weight between your feet during the backswing. This transferring of weight really helps you to become aware of where your weight is during the swing, and helps you to get a feel for the correct movement.

However, in the iron backswing, the body pivot remains centered. The lead shoulder turns and moves away from the target, but not as dramatically as the driver backswing. As you can see from the image above.

A drill we recommend for this is called “The Thong Drill” (stick with us!). Place an alignment stick behind you at address, with the stick touching between your butt cheeks. You want to practice feeling as though you are moving the alignment stick towards the target with your right butt cheek as you move up to the top of the backswing. This will help you to create the correct movement and weight transfer. We can’t guarantee you won’t get a couple of funny looks at the range though!

Downswing

In the downswing with the driver, we are looking for the torso to hold back. There won’t be as much of a weight transfer to the lead leg, but the focus should be on pushing up from the floor with the legs.

We recommend a drill called “Thunder Stamp” to help with this. Lift your lead heel up at the top of your backswing, and slam the heel onto the floor to initiate the downswing with the lower body. Like we have previously mentioned, this helps you to feel the sensation of pushing off the ground, getting the body to move up and back.

In the iron downswing you should shift your weight onto the lead leg in order to create lots of forward shaft lean. This steeper angle of attack with help to make sure you are hitting down on the ball at impact.

A drill we suggest for this is called “Two Tees”. Place the ball on an appropriately high tee peg, as if you were playing a par 3. Now place another tee peg around a grips length in front of the ball. The aim here is to hit the tee peg that’s in front of the ball as you hit the ball from the original tee peg. This will further help to promote that downswing swing.

In this week’s YouTube video we had the pleasure of coaching Annealiese. She was struggling with her ball striking and was regularly topping the ball.

We worked on two things during her lesson that completely transformed her ball striking, and here we’ll talk you through the first thing we worked on.

It’s a basic when it comes to golf, but so many people regularly overlook the importance of having the correct stance when addressing the ball.

In Annealiese’s case, we could see straight away that some adjustments needed to be made to the width of her stance and how closely she was standing to the ball.

As you can see from the image above, Annealiese was addressing the ball with a very narrow stance, which was inhibiting her ability to transfer her weight and power during the swing. A narrow stance like this will also negatively affect balance during the swing, which can further contribute to a poor and inconsistent strike.

So, we got her to widen her stance and aim to have her weight distributed evenly between her lead and trail foot.

From the down the line view, we could also see that Annealiese was standing very close the ball, which explained why her poor shots were being struck from the heel or the hosel of the club. This is because the closer you stand to the ball the harder it is to strike the ball out of the middle of the club, because the body is in the way of the swing.

To fix this, Annealiese moved further away from the ball at address (like Piers is demonstrating above), and whilst this did feel very foreign to her in the beginning of the lesson, the effects it had on her ball striking were incredible.

We also worked on another element of Annealiese’s set-up, so be sure to watch the full video below to find out what it was and the changes we made.

If you want consistent ball-then-turf contact then you’ve come to the right place.

In our latest YouTube video, we explain how we got Christian going from horrible duffs to consistently straight iron shots using this very simple drill.

‘The One And Two’ drill

Christian’s issue with his ball striking laid in his transition. The weight transfer that we see in all great ball strikers was lacking, and so we showed him this drill and the effects on his ball striking were immediate.

The one and two drill works like this. Swing back to the top of your backswing, this is the motion that we call ‘one’. Then, shift your weight onto the lead leg, this is what we refer to as the ‘and’. Feel free to actually say this out-loud, and exaggerate the way you say it, like “aaaaaand”. Then, finish the downswing, and this is the part of the swing we can call ‘two’. See the images below for a visual demonstration.

This drill works because it moves the body closer to the impact line before you actually strike the golf ball. Therefore, moving the low-point of the swing forward, means that the club first makes contact with the ball and not the ground before it.

For the full explanation of the drill, be sure to check out the video below.

This lesson completely transformed Percy’s golf swing as he went from duffs and shanks to consistently great iron shots.

For the full breakdown of what we worked on, be sure to check out the video linked below but for now, we’ll give you a taster of what we covered.

We broke this lesson down into three parts- the grip, the setup and backswing. Let’s go through what we worked on in the set-up.

Setup

Right away we noticed a couple of issues with Percy’s stance when he addressed the ball. As you can see from the image below he was standing very close to the ball and the majority of his weight was in the toes.

This was causing him problems in his swing, as it inhibited his movement. Standing that close to the ball meant he was also more likely to hit the hosel of the shaft at impact, which explains why he was suffering with the shanks.

To improve his ball striking and straighten his shot shape we got him to stand further away from the ball, so that he could fit one hand freely between his legs and the butt of the shaft. Then we placed an alignment stick on the floor and got him to evenly distribute his weight over the stick.

To see the incredible effect this had on his shots, check out the full video here.

We would go as far as to say, in terms of performance, this has to be the best golf lesson we have released on to YouTube so far.

At the start of the lesson, Jason was struggling with duffed and slicing iron shots.

So, we gave him two simple steps to correct this and the more the lesson went on, the more he started to absolutely pepper the pin.

Here is a brief run down of the things we worked on:

Grip

At first glance, Jason had a good grip, however looking at it from head on can sometimes be deceiving. In order to fix it, we took Jason’s right hand away, just looking at the left one and when we opened up his hand we found something contributing to his strike issues.

Jason set up with the club in the palm of his hand, not in the fingers. This was inhibiting his ability to turn the club at impact, so we adjusted his grip into the correct position. As you can see from the image below, the club is where Jason originally had his grip, but the blue line across his fingers is where we got him to hold it instead.

Side note, if you haven’t already checked out the ‘True Grip Glove”, pictured above, then you guys are really missing out. It’s an absolute game changer when it comes to ensuring a consistent grip, and it’s even R&A approved so you can use it in competition. Click HERE to get yourself one.

Release

Thanks to some questioning, we realised quickly that Jason’s perception of ‘release’ was actually causing his swing fault. So, in the lesson, we took some time to talk through what release through impact should look like.

When we talk about releasing the club, we’re referring to the club-head moving from open in the backswing, to closed, just past the point of impact. The terms ‘open’ and ‘closed’ are used in relation to the target. And whilst we want the club-head to rotate during impact, it needs to be done the correct way to have the desired effect.

Jason’s understanding of the movement was very ‘flippy’, as you can see from Andy’s imitation below, the wrists were bent and we want them to remain mostly straight through impact. Jason also had a lot of wrist bend through his release, and we wanted to reduce that too.

Instead of the above, when releasing the club through impact, you should aim to keep your arms and wrist relatively straight, with a focus on turning the hands over, not bending the wrists.

To see which drill we used to help Jason with his release, then check out the full video below.

We would say, in terms of performance, this has to be the best golf lesson we have released on to YouTube so far.

At the start of the lesson, Win was struggling with duff shots and fading the ball a bit more than he would like.

The solution? We didn’t overcomplicate it and focused on 3 key areas. The result? Consistency like you wouldn’t believe.

Be sure to check out the full video linked below for the in-depth explanation of the swing changes. But until then, to whet your appetite, here is a quick breakdown of the David Leadbetter drill we got him to use.

Flick the Mud Drill

Hold the club from the opposite end, and grip the shaft as you usually would. This will make the club feel a lot lighter than usual when swinging.

The aim of this drill is to flick the grip end of the club up, while you’re swinging to the top of the backswing. This movement ensures that you break your wrist adequately and reduces that ‘swaying away from the target’ motion that can happen when you start the backswing.
