This year, the 44th edition of the tournament will be held at the magnificent Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome, with Luke Donald (Europe) and Zach Johnson (USA) leading their respective teams.

After the absolute domination that was the 2021 Ryder Cup, where USA won by 19-9, it’s fair to say team Europe will have something to prove at this years competition.

We challenged him to an up and down short game competition, and took the opportunity to find out what he’s thinking when he stands over a challenging chip shot.

So today we’re passing on his tips and tricks when it comes to chipping.

1. Choose your landing zone, and play to that. Rickie rightly points out that too often golfers become obsessed with looking at the chip shot as a whole, and because of this they can easily get sucked into thinking they have to chip the ball all the way to the hole.

Choose your landing zone, and use the club that’ll play the best shot to get you there. After that, let the green do the work for you.

2. Move your practice around the green. In our time with Rickie he told us that he prefers to practice his short game while moving around the green and playing shots from different locations.

He said the 50+ shots from the same spot on the green can be helpful when you need to practice something mechanically in your swing.

But beyond this, he prefers to move about and switch it up between chip shots and then putting those balls to try and get them in.

This makes so much sense, because it helps to simulate course conditions while you’re practicing so we’d definitely recommend this to all of you guys if you aren’t doing this already!

3. Play the percentages. Rickie likes to evaluate each chip and play the one that’ll have the least negative impact if he doesn’t quite pull it off.

For example, in one shot we watched, he decided to fly the ball into the slope and he did this because he knew that if it came up a little short then it would still have a chance of rolling closer.

Instead of flying the ball all the way to the hole which had more potential to go wrong if he didn’t hit it exactly how he wanted it.

Tiger’s playing again, the Scottish weather may be the best we’ve ever seen, but we know our official picks are really what the people want to know about.

After my recent success in calling the winner of the of The US Open we can’t blame you, so we won’t keep you in suspense any longer.

This year I think it’s Rory’s time to lift the Claret Jug. We’ve watched him over the last few days on the range and on the course and his ball striking has been superb. The weather isn’t due to be as windy as we would typically expect for Scotland, and I think this will play into his hands nicely when you think about how far he can hit the ball and the bunkers he can take out of play. His creativity and shot shaping will also stand him in great stead to deal with all of the nuances of St Andrews.

Andy on the other hand is backing Jon Rahm. He thinks his distance off the tee and his ball striking will be great for any wind encountered. But he also has a great short game, and his imagination around the greens will definitely set him apart from the rest of the field. He’s a previous major winner, so he knows how to get it done with the spotlight shining on him. This will 100% come into play as there is no bigger occasion than the 150th Open!

It’s the 4th time this venue has hosted the prestigious competition and we cannot wait to watch every second of it. If the action is half as good as last weeks Canadian Open then it’s safe to say we’re all in for a treat.

But while the players are getting underway, we know you’re all dying to know who we think will be the one to lift the trophy. So we’re breaking down our top picks and why we believe they’ve got what it takes.

This year, I’m keeping it patriotic by backing Matthew Fitzpatrick. Over the last few weeks his performances, most noticeably at the Wells Fargo, have thrown him back into the spotlight, and rightly so.

Plus I think his ability to play on tight courses and his putting on especially fast greens will stand him in great stead for the week. Not to mention his ‘balls of steel’, mean that he’ll be able to cope under the pressure that comes with it being a major.

Andy on the other hand thinks Justin Thomas has what it takes to lift the trophy. It seems like an obvious choice after the incredible battle he had last week with Rory McIlroy, and it’s safe to say that he is in form! 

But Andy thinks it’s his ability to work the ball and his great stats (specifically tee to green strokes gained) that are going to be his stand out factor this week. He’s also had the inside scoop from Rory that Justin is one of the hardest working guys on the tour, enough said!

The Ryder Cup 2021 is about to begin, and we’ve seen lots of talk about top scorer predictions, so thought we’d throw our hats into the ring too.

So here is our breakdown, of which individual players will score the highest for their respective teams, and also what we think the final score will be overall.

For team USA it’s hard for us to look past the 2018 Ryder Cup veteran Justin Thomas.

His stand-out performance 3 years ago, in his first ever Ryder Cup appearance, makes him hard to forget and a very likely integral member in this year’s team.

His chemistry with Jordan Spieth makes them a formidable duo and his exceptional iron play will definitely put any opponent he faces under pressure.

He is also very vocal about his love for this competition, he takes the prospect of playing for his country very seriously, and so we expect to see him giving his all out on the course over the next 3 days!

In terms of team Europe, our highest scorer prediction is going to be Jon Rahm.

You can just see from all the media coverage this year that the Spaniard is super fired up and ready to take over the baton for the younger generation of Europeans.

With the likes of Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter inevitably coming to the end of their Ryder Cup career, Rahm is the one stepping up and showing that he is ready to take on that leadership role.

His 2018 performance against Tiger in the Sunday singles was awe-inspiring, and shows he’s got more than enough grit to go up against any of the US side.

We’ve spoken to him personally and can testify to the fact that he is uber passionate about the competition, and you can bet he’s going to pull out all the stop to do what he can to ensure Europe bring home the trophy again.

Ultimately, we think the competition this year is going to run really close, however the US have a huge advantage playing at home and we do think that will be the tipping point. 

Steve Stricker has done an amazing job of bringing the team together this year, and what with the team dinners and extra practice sessions, we think this could be the year that the US really look like a cohesive team and not such a team of individuals.
