In this video we show you simple steps that can make you unstoppable with your wedges from 100 yards and under!

We helped Stu dial in his wedge play, and here were the main points he took away:

  1. Club Selection- always make sure you’re playing with the correct loft for the type of pitch shot you want.
  2. Check your Wedges- have you got huge gaps in loft and distance? Make sure you fill it with an appropriate gap wedge.
  3. Leave yourself the right yardage- try not to leave yardages into the green that you don’t like to play.
  4. Narrow your stance- it will change the intention of the shot you play…shorter shot, narrower stance.
  5. Feel the club on the earth, not just the grass.
  6. Visualisation is 🔑

Check out the video below for all the details, and see Piers almost get rejected for a fist pump (he’s still not quite over it!)

A little while ago now we had the pleasure of meeting up with the one and only Rory McIlroy. As you’ll see in the video below we went head to head in a match-play comp, but don’t worry we didn’t forget to pick his brains for some great advice that we could pass on to you guys.

Rory was kind enough to give us 5 absolute gems and so today we’re passing them on to you, because we’re nice like that.

Also check out the YouTube video below to also see Piers hit the shot of his career to give us a chance against Rory during a one-hole match. 😏

  1. One shot at a time

It’s fair to say that no professional golfing career is complete without its fair share of hardships and the occasional slump, and Rory gave us some great advice when it came to situations where you’re not playing your best.

Both ourselves and Rory are of the mindset that you should play a round one shot at a time.

“Thinking too much gets you really bogged down in it, and you get inside your own head, which is not great in golf”.

He thinks by playing this way, it puts less pressure on you to perform and ultimately that’s when the best shots are played.

2. Controlling your emotions

In the same vein of thought, when it comes to dealing with your emotions on course, Rory says that controlling them ultimately comes down to patience and experience.

We love his point that you need to try and get away from that first negative thought, replace it with a positive and think of the opportunities you have coming up for the rest of the holes.

That’s not to say you should be playing all those shots coming up in your head, but just to remind yourself that it’s not all over if one bad hole is played.

3. Understand the conditions

As well as the mindset advice, Rory also threw in a few technical tips during our match (it’s almost as if he thought we needed them).

He correctly pointed out that a vast majority of amateur players do not account for the difference in direction when compensating for the wind.

When playing a shot into wind you need to compensate more than playing a shot that is down wind.

So, it might be a 2-club difference into wind, but for the same wind speed downwind you will likely only need a 1-club difference.

Something to bear in mind as most countries now enter winter golf mode.

4. Applying the right pressure

When it comes to grips, one of the most common questions we get is ‘how hard should I grip the club’ and Rory gave a great explanation to this one.

He says it is hard to keep a completely consistent grip strength throughout the swing, as naturally you’re going to grip it tighter at impact- however aiming for about a 7/10 is a great place to aim for.

Interestingly, a lot of players seem to be worried about gripping the club too tightly, however Rory thinks it’s more detrimental to grip it too loosely, and we have to say we agree.

5. The Pre-Putt Routine

Finally, we managed to bag a great putting tip from Rory, and who doesn’t love one of those.

Let’s also just point out that after giving us this tip he managed to sink the birdie putt, which may or may not have beaten us (find out below).

He likes to start off by visualising what would happen to the ball if he were to hit it straight at the hole.

By doing this he says he can usually then just move his aim more accurately to either side of the hole depending on how he saw it, and this really helps him to see the break in the putt more clearly.

He then likes to pick a spot a couple inches in front of the ball (something which Andy also loves to do), along the target line so he has a spot that is easier to aim at, and he knows if he hits that spot that the ball will follow his intended line.

All in all, this is one of our favourite videos we’ve ever done, largely because we did it with such a special golfer. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to bring you a brand-new video with Rory early next year.

So, if those tips have tempted you to watch the video in full that we did with him, where he may or may not have beaten us 😢 then check it out below.

It’s the taking part that counts, right?

Ruud Gullit is a true soccer legend, regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. Ruud captained the Netherlands national team that was victorious in the 1988 EUFA Euros. He also received the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1987 being named “World Soccer Player of The Year.”

We met Ruud at a golf event and it became apparent that he has an enormous passion for golf, so we thought what a great opportunity to talk to a world class sportsman to discuss the differences between the two sports, what he has applied from soccer to golf and how to thrive and perform your best under pressure. This is a fascinating interview from one of the best athletes of all time.

Breaking 100 may seem a distant dream no matter how close you get to the landmark barrier. Before we give you 5 tips on helping you do this, revisit the opening statement and how the language we use is a big problem. Landmark, barrier, and so many more words make shooting a score that is less than 100 seem so out of reach. Your mindset is crucial when it comes to improving your scores. Let’s get ready to Break 100!

1. Don’t add up your score until the end

Do you add up your scores as you are playing? Do you know exactly what your score is at any given point during the game? Have you had 3 holes left and you know exactly what score you need to break 100? This is a really bad idea – imagine you had a caddy and he told you that all you need on the last hole is a bogey to break 100! This puts undue pressure on you.

By focusing on the outcome, you won’t be able to focus on one shot at a time. So, next time you play, tell your playing partners not to tell you your score until you’ve finished. Make sure you only put the hole totals down and then work out your score at the end.

Break 100: adding up your golf scorecard

2. Allow for your bend

Changing your technique on the golf course is extremely difficult and a lot of times unnecessary. Of course, if you have a big slice, you’ll want to get rid of it. However, if you have a big fade and an occasional slice, then you could just simply allow for it. It’s okay to fade the ball – remember, ‘fades are fine, slices are sinister.’ So long as you’re not slicing every shot, then a fade/big fade will be repeatable and allow you to hit more fairways than trying to change your technique whilst playing. Leave the technique changes to the practice area.

Break 100: play a fade on the golf course

3. Stick to your finish

Striking your irons well is a crucial part of creating consistency on the golf course. Just think – 1cm out on your strike can result in you missing the green which in turn puts your short game under pressure. Sticking to your finish and focusing on a well-balanced finish position, you will increase your chances of striking the ball well and create a lot more consistency with your accuracy and distance control.

Break 100: perfect your finish, strike your irons

4. Master the low chip

When playing chip shots around the green, we recommend playing the ball as low to the ground as possible. Putting off the green is absolutely fine and often the best option – a bad putt will end up closer than a bad chip.

The problem with playing a chip with a lofted club is: if you get the contact wrong, the result can be a long way from the flag. If you hit the ground before the ball with a sand wedge, the club will slow down quickly and leave the ball short. If you thin the shot, the trajectory will be a lot lower and too powerful as a result. Think – if you were to thin a 7 iron, the ball will go low and run a lot. If you hit a good 7 iron, then it will go low and run a lot. So, with a 7 iron, not only is it harder to hit a fat shot, but if you do thin it the shot will behave similarly to a good shot.

Break 100: master the low chip on the golf course

The trick is to land the ball just on the green as near to you as possible. By landing it on the green, you will get a consistent bounce. Next time, on the course, pick a landing spot just on the green and go for a lower lofted club.

5. Pendulum putting for less 3 putts

Before you read on, ask yourself this: how many 3-putts do you have per round? Your answer may surprise you. If it’s over 36, just imagine if you had 36 putts! That in itself could be good enough to break 100.

If we can get you hitting your first putt closer to the hole, you’ll have less 3-putts. The biggest problem we see is: golfers control the distance they hit putts by the effort level of the stroke. Often, the length of the backswing is the same for all putts – it’s just the effort level of the through-swing. By letting the length of your backstroke control the power level, you will start achieve a pendulum stroke. The best way to check this is to video your putting from the front view.

break 100: pendulum putting

By working at a more pendulum-style stroke, you will start to rely on your natural instinct to judge distances on your putts.

We’ve been using these simple tips to help golfers break the 100 mark for the last 20 years, so if you think these would benefit you, then start working at them. Visit our full Break 100 coaching plan series for a structured programme that will get you breaking 100.

As coaches we are always asking, “How can we change golf swings quickly?” If you are someone who has struggled doing swing changes in the past then you need to keep reading.

Often people struggle to make swing changes because they don’t commit to the change enough.  The basic reason for this is that a change in technic, which feels massive to the golfer. However the reality is, the change is fairly small.

So think of this… feel and real are often different!  For example – if you have the Over The Top swing fault, the best way to change this is by not trying to just swing the club on plane, but by feeling that your swing is well under the plane the hopeful reality is that you’re actually on plane!  So basically you’re exaggerating and doing the exact opposite! This is what creates the fastest change.  When doing this because the change is so quick you will notice different results, so just bare this in mind as the initial results will be quite different.

Struggling with over the top, reverse spine, fat/thin shots or more? Come check out all the videos we have just on Swing Faults and how to correct them.

OVER-THE-TOP

You will often see the best players in the world have practice swings which are the complete opposite of the swing fault that they may have, for instance better players tend to have a path which is too much to the right of target when they strike the ball, so they will have practice swings feeling the Over The Top swing fault.  This allows them to feel a path, which is not so much to the right when they strike the ball.

THE-FEEL

THE-REAL

Give it a go and let us know how you get on.
