Stop chipping like Phil Mickelson!

So many people see how good Phil is at chipping and think they must copy his technique. What they don’t understand is, this is a technique that Phil has mastered and practices every day.

For amateur golfers there are a lot of flaws to this technique that can cause you a lot of problems with consistency.

In this video we are going to show you a simple technique that is easy for you to replicate for more consistency with your chip shots.

Earlier this year we had the pleasure of working with ladies long drive competitor, Sofia Arthur. However for this lesson in particular she asked us to help her with her chipping.

Ahead of making any changes we needed to look at her technique and set up at the beginning of the lesson. As you can see from the image below, Sofia had the ball quite far back in her stance. Having lots of shaft lean contributed to her having a very steep angle of attack when she hit her chips.

We could also see after she hit a few shots, that her backswing was significantly shorter than her follow through swing, and from asking some exploratory questions we found out that this was likely because she was focussing on the idea of getting through the shot.

Because of this set up and follow though, Sofia’s ball flight was considerably lower than we would want for regular chips, making it harder for the ball to stop. So, here are the changes that we suggested she make to improve her technique:

Ball Position: We moved Sofia’s ball position further forward so it was more central between both feet.

Backswing: We suggested that she thought of her chipping swing like a pendulum, however far back she swung is how far through she needed to swing.

Swing thought: Instead of focussing on the length of swing, we got Sofia to focus on feeling like she was brushing the grass with her club. Be sure to check out the full video below to hear my “Airplane analogy” that we also used!

These three small changes helped to contribute to a higher ball flight, allowing her to stop the ball more quickly in situations like this.

Now, this won’t work for every kind of lie, up until now all of these tips have worked on the premise of a good starting lie. So what do you do if you find your ball sat down in the rough? In this case we would recommend something very similar to Sofia’s initial technique.

This is because rough is an unpredictable surface, so you want the club to spend as little time interacting with the grass as possible. So a steep angle of attack where you hit ball first, then grass is preferred.

We also offer another couple of ways we would recommend to chip out of the rough (watch the video below).

If you’ve loved these chipping tips and want more then be sure to check out our Complete Chipping coaching plan.

It covers every aspect of chipping, from the basic technique to how to factor slope into the shot. We even have a section dedicated to speciality shots, so you can really show off in front of your playing partners.

It’s common knowledge that a lot of golf shots can be saved during a round if the player’s short game is dialled in. Yet all too often we see golfers making the same mistakes, which in turn hold them back from playing better.

This week, we’re breaking down the top 3 mistakes most golfers make when chipping around the green, and we’re going to explain what to do instead. So let’s get straight into it.

1. Hitting down on the back of the ball

Who here is guilty of using this set up when chipping?- Ball at the back of the stance and club shaft leaning towards the target. We see it all the time, but this set up seriously reduces your margin for error and if you were unfortunate enough to duff the ball, then the leading edge is going to snag into the turf making the situation a whole lot worse.

To chip consistently well you need to utilise the bounce of the club, getting it to glide across the turf. To do this, it might sound counterintuitive, but you need to swing at the ground and not the golf ball. It’s absolutely fine to make contact with the turf when chipping, providing that you do so using the bounce of the club.

So here is the set up you need to use to do this. The ball needs to be in the middle of the stance, maybe even a touch towards the lead foot. You need to address the ball with a neutral shaft angle, and with your weight split 70/30, favouring the lead foot. From this position it is a lot less likely that you’ll snag the lead edge, and this will overall improve your consistency when chipping around the green.

2. Swinging straight down the target line

We don’t know where this idea first started, but we tend to see a lot of golfers who think they need to swing straight at the target when chipping. Truth is, this couldn’t be more wrong and it tends to lead to players losing connection between their arms and the rest of their body and this compromises the strike of the shot.

The truth is that the club always needs to swing along an arc. The club should finish up and left of the target, with the golfer’s chest following suit to face the target. The butt of the club should point towards the golfer’s belt buckle. This way the arms are well connected to the body, the club has more stability, and it is a much more consistent and repeatable movement.

To practice this, we suggest you use the classic ‘towel under the arms’ drill. With the main aim being that you do not drop the towel when making the swing. This way, the arms stay nice and close to the body, and the whole thing moves as a unit through the shot.

3. Over accelerating through the shot

“Ahh I think I decelerated on that one.” If we’ve heard that phrase once, we’ve heard it a million times. It always makes us cringe because we know exactly what’s coming next (queue a ball shooting across the practice green and taking another golfer’s ankles out as it’s been thinned 500 yds!).

Contrary to popular belief, the best in the game actually feel like they’re decelerating when they get to impact of a chip shot. Rickie Fowler told us that he like to feel as though everything stops at the ball. Obviously it doesn’t, but that’s the way he likes to describe it. In reality, the hands should slow as they get to impact, but the club carries on moving. The result is a much shorter, more controlled follow through.

When you think about the best chippers out there, you’ll usually hear them described as having ‘soft hands’. This is what we want to encourage, not ‘fast hands’. And if you want to alter the distance of the shot then you can use the length of the backswing and the smoothness to do this.

If you’ve enjoyed these tips then you’ll be pleased to know that we have more where that came from. In fact, we’ve created an entire coaching plan focussed on chipping that’ll be sure to help you save some shots around the green.

Here’s a sneaky preview of what’s included:

  • The basics
  • Judging distance
  • Tackling the rough
  • Trouble shots and slopes
  • Speciality shots

A hugely underrated part of the game, chipping can make or break a good round of golf. The one thing we see the most is that many golfers don’t actually know how to setup correctly.

So we’ve decided it’s about time that we set the record straight in our latest YouTube vid. Here are the headline points broken down…

  1. Set Up- Ball in the middle of the stance, flair both feet slightly, weight slightly favouring the lead side and trail shoulder only slightly lower than the lead shoulder.

2. The Swing- Should be like a pendulum, the club goes back as far as it goes through. Create club movement with the body, not the hands.

3. The Finish- Club head travels in and and away from the target line. Chest and body face the target and weight finishes on the lead leg.

Rahmbo is a Spanish Stallion and a short game wizard and there really isn’t much he can’t do around the green.

He’s currently rated in the top 10 for scrambling on the PGA Tour and is sitting at 1st from scrambling from the fringe, decent going to say the least.

We caught up with him last year and was lucky enough to see the tekkers with our own eyes, so here’s what we picked up from his chipping specifically.

Firstly, Rahm makes an excellent point that the shot he plays is very much dependent on a few factors, these are – the lie, is the pin elevated, and is the shot playing up or downhill?

Once he has established these 3 things, he is then in a much better position to choose an appropriate shot.

For example, Rahm rightly points out that the lie will affect your ability to create backspin.

This is important because you need to determine whether the ball will release as this will then impact where you want to land it.

Before playing the shot Rahm also likes to pace it out, so he knows exactly how far he needs to hit the ball.

He also chooses a spot on the green where he would like to land the ball, and while doing this he considers factors like slope and break.

In terms of setup, Jon prefers to address to the ball with an open clubface, his feet slightly open to target, with his hands slightly further forward so that he can maintain that angle throughout his swing.

This allows him to be more aggressive but still maintain a shallow swing.

He isn’t a fan of breaking his wrists throughout the swing because he thinks it makes it too complicated and inconsistent.

He likes to set the club early and hold that throughout the swing whilst focusing on swinging the arms.

So, what about the tricky lies?

When it comes to playing out of a divot Rahm recommends utilising a steeper swing to make sure you contact the ball properly.

If your ball finishes on a downslope, then he says you can swing more aggressively.

So, if you commit to the shot, you should be able to create lots of backspin.

He says you should never be afraid to play these kinds of chips, as they are opportunities for some of the best shots.

Regardless of what he says though, the thought of those shots still gives us the chills.

So, there you have it, some short game gold from Rahmbo himself.

But if that’s not quenched your thirst for coaching knowledge then have no fear…we’ve got tonnes of short game content just for you.
