They’re questions we get asked all the time- “Is there a difference between how you’re supposed to swing a driver and an iron? How are they different? And how can I make sure I’m swinging correctly?”

The short answer is yes, they are different. So today we’re going through the set-up, the backswing and the downswing for both shots. So you can see all the differences, and implement some of our top tips into your own practice.

A key factor you need to understand when comparing these two clubs is ‘low point’. When we refer to low point we are referring to the lowest point on the swing arc through the hitting zone.

So now we’ve got that definition out of the way, lets clarify the differences between the two clubs-

Driver

The driver is used to create power and distance. You can tee it up as high as you want, so the ground does not interfere with the shot. To hit the ball as far as possible it’s recommended you hit up on the ball. Meaning there is upward angle of attack at impact, and the low point of the swing is before the ball.

Iron

The irons are used for precision and control. Nearly every iron shot is played off the ground, and because of this it is more affected by ground conditions (for example if the ball is sitting down, or on a slope). Because of these factors it is suggested you hit down on the shot using an downward angle of attack which also means the low point will be past the golf ball.

Now we’ve established the clubs are different, are used for different things and need different swings, let’s go through the three main parts of the swing and give you some tips.

Set-up

For the driver, the ball needs to be teed up high on a tee peg. You should address the ball with a wider stance, with the ball position in line with the heel of the lead foot. Weight distribution should be 55/45, favouring the trail side, and there should be a fair amount of tilt in the upper body, which can be seen in the image below.

Alternatively, for an iron shot, the ball should be addressed with a narrower stance. Ball position must be in the middle of the stance, maybe ever so slightly towards the lead foot, and the weight should be distributed 55/45 however this time favouring the lead side. As you can see from the image above, the torso tilt for an iron shot should be minimal when compared to that for the driver.

Backswing

In a driver backswing we expect to see to see a lot of shoulder movement away from the target. This helps to create more room in the downswing, and facilitates bringing the club back to the ball on a shallower, upward angle of attack.

As you can see the weight has been loaded onto the trail leg, ready for the weight and power to be transferred to the lead side during the downswing. This weight transfer helps to create the distance and power.

A drill that we love to recommend, to ensure you’re getting into the correct position in the backswing is to bounce your weight between your feet during the backswing. This transferring of weight really helps you to become aware of where your weight is during the swing, and helps you to get a feel for the correct movement.

However, in the iron backswing, the body pivot remains centered. The lead shoulder turns and moves away from the target, but not as dramatically as the driver backswing. As you can see from the image above.

A drill we recommend for this is called “The Thong Drill” (stick with us!). Place an alignment stick behind you at address, with the stick touching between your butt cheeks. You want to practice feeling as though you are moving the alignment stick towards the target with your right butt cheek as you move up to the top of the backswing. This will help you to create the correct movement and weight transfer. We can’t guarantee you won’t get a couple of funny looks at the range though!

Downswing

In the downswing with the driver, we are looking for the torso to hold back. There won’t be as much of a weight transfer to the lead leg, but the focus should be on pushing up from the floor with the legs.

We recommend a drill called “Thunder Stamp” to help with this. Lift your lead heel up at the top of your backswing, and slam the heel onto the floor to initiate the downswing with the lower body. Like we have previously mentioned, this helps you to feel the sensation of pushing off the ground, getting the body to move up and back.

In the iron downswing you should shift your weight onto the lead leg in order to create lots of forward shaft lean. This steeper angle of attack with help to make sure you are hitting down on the ball at impact.

A drill we suggest for this is called “Two Tees”. Place the ball on an appropriately high tee peg, as if you were playing a par 3. Now place another tee peg around a grips length in front of the ball. The aim here is to hit the tee peg that’s in front of the ball as you hit the ball from the original tee peg. This will further help to promote that downswing swing.

In this week’s YouTube video, we introduced Javier to a drill that turned his chronic slice into straight drives in minutes.

For the full breakdown, be sure to check out the full video. But for now, let’s give you a sneak peak of the drill we used with Javi, and how it helped him.

Impact Drill

From the first couple of swings, we could see Javi had an open club face at impact, meaning there were a lot of heel strikes. This open club face was creating the slice ball flight that he was trying to avoid. So, to hit the ball straighter we had to change the way the club face was meeting the ball at impact.

Using our very own impact bag (https://shop.meandmygolf.com/products/impact-bag), we got him to swing at half speed and focus on hitting the bag with the toe. We used the analogy of a finish line, if hitting the ball is the finish line then we want the toe of the club to cross the finish line before the heel.

This encouraged Javi to be more aware of where the club face was throughout the impact zone, and square the club face up quicker than he was previously doing.

The results of this simple drill were incredible, and Javi was finding more consistency. We also worked on part of his backswing to help with correcting his slice, so, be sure to check out the video below for all the details.

So many golfers just want to hit longer, straighter drives when they’re out on the golf course.

In this week’s YouTube video we worked with Adrian, on the simplest things to help him find more consistency with his driver.

We started with the grip and body alignment, then we moved on to a small move you can make with your right arm to easily add distance to your drives.

Body Alignment

When looking at Adrian’s swing path on the launch monitor we could see that his swing was moving out to the right of the target. In this case it wasn’t due to the swing path being out to in, it was a case of his body alignment not being parallel to the target line.

As you can see from the image below, his feet were actually aiming right of the target line, which explains why his swing path was 8 degrees to the right as players usually swing in line with the way their body is aiming.

This was a very simple fix, and it’s one of the reasons we recommend that you guys go back to basics regularly to check the fundamentals of your swing. We put an alignment stick down on the floor in the correct position, running parallel to the target line and got Adrian to set up with this stick in mind. Within a few shots his ball flight has straightened dramatically.

There are so many reasons why your driver swing may be inconsistent.

However, what we find is that most amateur golfers are trying to correct the wrong things, which only makes things worse. Sometimes you don’t need to work on the fancy things in the golf swing.

It can be simple changes that can make a big difference and this lesson ultimately proves that.

In this week’s YouTube video we breakdown why your grip could be the cause of all your driver inconsistencies.

How you hold the club has a direct impact on how you present the club face to the ball at impact, and so often we see people who slice the ball have a weak grip.

A weak grip really can kill any chance you have of good ball striking, and when we say weak grip, we mean like you see below. The club sits more in the palm than the fingers and you can’t see any knuckles or the glove logo on the lead hand.

When you grip the club like this with your lead hand, the trail hand tends to creep over the top of the grip, and this combination really inhibits your ability to make a good swing. It limits your wrist movement, opens the club face and your hands and arms have a much harder time of working with your body.

You should be able to see at least two knuckles on your lead hand when you look down at your club, this is a great way to check your hand is in the correct place. The image below is what you’re aiming for.

If you’re still not sure you’ve got your lead hand in the correct position then you should definitely purchase our True Grip Gloves. It has cleverly coloured panels that help ensure you get your hand in the right place, and even better, it’s competition compliant, so you can play with it every round! If you want to get one for yourself then you can CLICK HERE, and it’ll take you to the Me and My Golf Shop.

Enjoy all of that? Then you’re going to love our Simple Guide To Straighter Drives. It’s been designed to stop you losing distance and increase your confidence off the tee.

In this lesson we provided Harmony with both a setup change and a backswing change so she could see results instantly. The best bit? We DIDN’T need to make huge swing changes to eradicate Harmony’s slice, just a couple of small tweaks as to how she was positioning her body.
